Off 95 - Senior Thesis

Interstate 95 passes through major cities and hubs of trade and transportation along the Eastern Coast of the United States. My series Off 95 is the result of my travels on this highway in the early Spring of 2019. Looking at the area that surrounds this major thoroughfare, similar qualities begin to appear whether it be the encroachment of industry on nature or large structures jutting into the sky. What can be seen alongside I-95 is unique in its own right, yet familiar to many living along the Eastern Seaboard. Living in the Mid-Atlantic region and going on trips along the East Coast, these drives were just a few of the many I have taken over my lifetime. With this series, I wanted to capture the cloudy and rainy drive that is typically not highlighted in stories of one’s travels. Rather than focusing on the “To” and “From”, I observe the picturesque, bleak and sometimes absurd surroundings of the in-between. All of the images in this series have been taken while in the passenger’s seat of a car from Pennsylvania to Virginia and back.
